The Vintner's Luck, which stars Jeremie Renier, Gaspard Ulliel, Vera Farmiga, and Keisha Castle-Hughes, was directed by Niki Caro (Whale Rider). The film is about a winemaker in the 19th century who is visited by an angel every year. Vampires seem to have taken over as the dominant mythical creatures, I wanted to make a list of angels we have seen recently in any movies or television. Not all of them have the trademark wings, however.

1. Gaspard Ulliel in The Vintner's Luck

The most recent addition to the line of angels. Xas, played by Ulliel, travels yearly to Sobran, Renier's character, on his birthday and helps him make the best wine anyone has ever made. Xas, however, wants more than to help. He returns every year with hopes of making Sobran fall in love with him.

2. Emma Thompson in Angels in America
Of all the angels in this list, she is by far the most traditional one. Tearing Prior's ceiling apart, she announces he is the one that can save humanity from the grip of AIDS. Not only is this enough, but humans experience an ecstasy of orgasmic bliss when she presents herself.

"Greetings, Prophet! The great work begins! The Messenger has arrived!"

3. Tilda Swinton in Constantine
By far, of course, my favorite angel of them all. Gabriel, played by Swinton, wants to make humanity worthy of God's love. Jealous of His love and easy forgiveness towards humans, she plots to bring forth the son of Lucifer to wreak havoc and make humans prove their worth.

"You're handed this precious gift, right? Each one of you granted redemption from the Creator - murderers, rapists, and molesters - all of you, you just have to repent, and God takes you into His bosom. In all the worlds in all the universe, no other creature can make such a boast, save man. It's not fair. If sweet, sweet God loves you so, then I will make you worthy of His love. I've been watching for a long time. It's only in the face of horror that you truly find your nobler selves. And you can be so noble. So, I'll bring you pain, I'll bring you horror, so that you may rise above it. So that those of you who survive this reign of hell on earth will be worthy of God's love."

4. Christopher Walken in The Prophesy
Crazy angel Gabriel in here is played by the ever wonderful Walken. You can count on Walken to take the most bizarre roles, but if he does, he usually does them justice. Gabriel hate humans in this film and does not hesitate to take any out of his path.

"I'm an angel. I kill firstborns while their mamas watch. I turn cities into salt. I even, when I feel like it, rip the souls from little girls, and from now till kingdom come, the only thing you can count on in your existence is never understanding why."

Evil I tell you!

5. Alan Rickman in Dogma
A comedy with angels. But don't fear, Rickman is the voice of God. When two angels are sent to a worse place than Hell - Wisconsin- a series of events lead to God's disappearance and the race to find him.

"Human beings have neither the aural nor the psychological capacity to withstand the awesome power of God's true voice. Were you to hear it, your mind would cave in and your heart would explode within your chest. We went through five Adams before we figured that out."

Machines vs. Mechanisms

Nevermind...

Maybe you've noticed the 'X Machine' or 'X Mechanism' tags. Well, it all started with one of the brightest stars in the universe: the Blanchett Machine. It seemed to me that this particular actress was much more than that, almost not human. Her performances were amazing (so much, it seems, that her performances must be tremendous in order to get attention). And by that order, almost machine-like, perfect, with no bad "oh-you-can-tell-she-is-acting" moments.

Therefore, a long time ago, but not long before Swintonism, in my wild, chaotic mind, I began what is now a tradition, but it soon became law, in my kingdom (My room, of course. From there I rule and manage my life):

All actresses and actors (I insist on actresses being first, you know, more important) were to be given the honorary title Machine or Mechanism.

There is only one exception. The one, the only Tilda Swinton, more commonly known as THE SWINTON EXTRAORDINAIRE, or when reffering to the general greatness and goodness, Swintonism.

BEYOND ALL LIMITS

As of recently, I've decided to save myself the embarrassment of wanting to be a filmmaker, and not having watched any of the great classics. Of course, I'm not a complete idiot when it comes to them. I've read about them, I just haven't watched many. Gone With the Wind, Singin' in the Rain, Streetcar Named Desire, Casablanca are a few of the few I've seen. For me, being part Mexican, of course that includes the Mexican Classics.

A Little history. Mexico's Golden Age of Cinema from the 1930's to the 1950's. That's when many of our classics were made, before of course, the main form of entertainment became low-brow comedies... Well, during this time, La Perla, Doña Barbara, Doña Diabla, Nosotros Los Pobres, Pepe El Toro, El Bruto, etc were made.

Of the many actors and actresses, there a few that we remember today as the Icons of our time. Pedro Infante, Jorge Negrete, Cantinflas, Katy Jurado, Dolores del Rio, and the ever-present María Félix.

María Félix, an extravagant and beautiful woman, is austanding to look at. Considered by many one of the greatest actress of her time, her fame limited only by her choice to not learn English. She became a legend among the Spanish-speaking audiences as early as the debut of her third film, Doña Barbara. A film based on one of the best novels in Spanish.

In order to see her in action, I decided to look for her movies, which, sadly, are hard to find. The only movie that seemed to be available quickly was Beyond All Limits through Netflix. Of course, it is hardly her best film, but still enjoyable. The larger-than-life emotions and the melodramatic music adds a Far From Heaven-esque feel.

And, of course, NO ONE has ever looked as beautiful in high heels and beautiful, almost-high-end fashion walking through the unpaved streets of a small Mexican fishing town.

I'll post thumnails later. The dubbed version is not too bad, but I guess it'll just have to do. All in hoping people will see her genious.

I've just come back from watching Up. I was amazing. Now with the 10-best-picture-nominee thing, I think it'll be nominated. When it finished I was left wanting more.; that doesn't happen with just any movie. It's Pixar, so, of course, the quality is wonderful. The characters and plot are great. Go watch it.

I have a growing disdain towards Brody.

SWINTONISM

A long time ago, I became obsessed with Kate Winslet for reasons unknown to me. I had to have all of her movies, see all TV shows with her, etc. My mania, however, began to disappear around the 2008 Oscars. The person who already looked different enough was wearing a trash bag. What was she thinking? This are the OSCARS! NO ONE wears asymmetrical, velvety trash bags to the Oscars. However, I began to admire her. She had a fashionable courage (pun), of that, I was sure.

My admiration for her began to grow and grow until she became my favorite actress. Tilda Swinton. As I have learned more about her. I really think that her name ought to be enough when introducing her.

I have found, however, that not everyone is as willing to become her fans. My family, for example, has been known to be anti-Swinton. But I just think they do it to make me angry.

Sooooooooo I've decided to invent my own religion. It's called Swintonism.

Some days ago my brother told me he dreamed of Kate Winslet. He said her met her and she was willing to meet me. But he was afraid because I was going to ignore her because of my new-found faith for Swintonism.
